Among the known and unknown cocktails, Blue Drink is recently a bartenders as well as the liquor lover’s favorite. There are many variations of a blue drink. A blue drink is usually made of blue Curacao. This is from where it gets it bluish green color and likewise its name follows. A very sought after and likeable blue drink is Blue Hawaii.
This blue colored drink is made of blue Curacao, rum, a sweet and sour mix, pineapple mix. Vodka is optional – depending on each ones taste – how much liquor content one would like to consume. You want just smooth or even strong. It also has a name alike. Make sure you do not confuse Blue Hawaii with Blue Hawaiian – as this one does not contain vodka and the sweet and sour mix is replaced by coconut crème. It is a tropical drink.
The creation of this drink is traced down back to 1957. It was invented by Harry Yee. Since those ancient times Harry was a bartender working in the Hilton Hawaiian Village – Waikiki, Hawaii. He was asked by a Dutch distiller to fix a drink with their blue colored Curacao liqueur. After some trial and error experiments he came up with this version which was quite different from the popular drinks designed today. The signature highlights of this new creation were the pineapple wedge, the signature blue color and the now famous cocktail umbrella.
The name Blue Hawaii is indirectly related to Elvis Presley’s film of the same name. Blue Hawaii is meant to be served nice and strong – on the rocks. Like all tropical drinks, there are many ways this drink can be made and served. Its ingredients are also varied and plenty. It blends very well with ice and is presented usually frozen and on the rock. It is served in a variety of glassware. It can also be served in whimsical containers like parfait glasses, carved out pineapples, tiki mugs, cocktail glasses or even carved out coconuts.
